Las Vegas Tattoo Artist

Black & grey realism, portraits, and horror tattoos by Joe Castillo. Nearly 20 years behind the machine, inside Club Tattoo at Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas.

Joe Castillo started tattooing in 2006. Before he ever touched a machine, he was painting and drawing — oil on canvas, charcoal on paper. That fine art foundation isn't a detail. It's the reason his work holds up the way it does.
His specialty is black and grey realism, with a particular focus on portraiture and horror. Faces, shadow, depth, the kind of detail that makes people look twice. He draws inspiration from some of the most respected names in realism — David Vega, Bob Tyrell, Noah, and Shine — and earned his first convention award on a portrait piece early in his career.
Joe is based at Club Tattoo inside Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. Clean studio, serious work, real consultations. He doesn't rush design decisions, and he doesn't take shortcuts on execution.
The right artist makes the difference between a tattoo you love for life and one you wish you'd thought through more carefully. Joe takes the time to get it right.
The design, the placement, the execution. That's not a sales pitch. That's just how he works.

Black & grey realism. Portraits. Horror. Every piece designed with one question in mind: is this going to last?

Most tattoo shops will take your money and move on to the next client. Joe's approach is different. He trained in fine art before he ever picked up a machine. He thinks about longevity on every piece — how it heals, how it ages, how it looks on your skin 15 years from now. That standard doesn't happen by accident. It happens because he cares about the work more than the transaction.

Joe's clients include Las Vegas locals who've been in his chair multiple times and first-timers who flew in specifically for his work. What they consistently say isn't just that the tattoo looks great — it's that it still looks great. That's the difference between an artist who executes and one who actually thinks about what he's putting on your skin.

Joe spent more time on the consultation than any artist I've worked with. The portrait he did of my dad is the most accurate, detailed piece I own. It still looks incredible two years later.

I came in with a horror concept I'd been sitting on for over a year. Joe took it seriously, pushed back on a couple of elements that wouldn't have held up, and the final piece is exactly what I wanted — but better.

Flew to Vegas specifically to get tattooed by Joe. Worth every dollar and every minute of the flight. His black and grey work is on another level.
